Over the six weeks, DESIGNnine will produce a plan for the redevelopment of a site in central London for our client Laing O’Rourke. The site is in the Temple area and will house one or more mixed-use buildings, which will include residential, commercial and leisure spaces as well as a Containment 4 research facility for the Government. With the location being right in the heart of London, the key constraint on the project is space. The design must also take into account important considerations such as vibrations from the underlying tube lines, blast loading from possible terrorist attacks, the incline of the site and a transfer structure to take helicopter landings. It is important that the buildings be designed for manufacture and construction so that the project can be delivered in a short period of time with minimal amount of in-situ work. DESIGNnine will strive to design energy efficient structures with the aim of achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating.
