GDP 2015‎ > ‎Groups and Projects‎ > ‎

For this Group Design Project, Group 5 has been tasked with the design of an offshore High Voltage Direct Current Converter Platform. This platform, as the name suggests, converts Alternating Current to Direct Current. This is done to minimize energy losses in the transport of electricity from offshore wind farms to the National Grid. This project is challenging in that it is not only inclusive of all subjects within Civil Engineering, but it is also a collaboration between Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering disciplines. Other challenges include taking into account the sensitivity of the equipment on board the structure. Since this is a relatively new technology, there is not much of a track record, but we have been using experience from the offshore oil and gas sector to inspire and supplement our design.
