The beginning of week three saw the start of the serious calculations. (Or as one team member called it, Hardcore Engineering!) Over the first two weeks we had done large amounts of research into all the various sections of our project, but now it was time to start applying what we had discovered to our problems and coming up with a more complete strategy for overcoming them. Our critical review at the end of week two had proven very positive and our clients had highlighted many things they felt were good in our work, but they had also directed us into further examination of structural works.
Now that clear sub-teams have developed we chose to keep in them and build on what we had already achieved. Rory, Omar and Theepan continued to focus on the basement excavation and decided to arrange some consultations with various geotechnical engineers and specialist companies, and even managed to persuade a very kind man from Keller Geotechnique to explain jet grouting! Gavin and Constantinos continued to work hard at producing some beautiful detailed CAD drawings which allowed us to highlight the key areas we would need to examine further.
Klementyna and Pete undertook some initial costing work looking at the finishings in particular as well as some fire safety and services engineering. And Tom and Emily worked on the new structural scheme for our construction work.
Going forwards we have plenty of work left to do now that we are into the main structural phase of the work. Hopefully by the end of next week we will be able to have a complete load take down through our new structural scheme and we will be in a good position to produce a complete report on our designs. I think we should be able to produce a very convincing tender as to why our designs would benefit our client!
